#9 Innovative Business Case: Ocean Rainforest (DK)

  • Mitigates the effects of climate change by absorbing CO2
  • Sustainable alternative for food and feed
  • Creates local jobs and short supply chain

Ocean Rainforest is the only company in the world with a proven scalable and survivable Macro Algae Cultivation Rig. They produce seaweed in open ocean installations in the Faroe Islands, situated in the crystal clear waters of the North Atlantic off the Danish coast.

The wonder of cultivating seaweed – rather than taking it from wild stocks – is that it’s carbon negative. As more underwater seaweed grows, more CO2 is absorbed. This is where the company’s name comes from. This underwater rainforest can capture more greenhouse gases than a tropical rainforest, and it sustains the ecosystem of the fjords.

The production process is very gentle. Macroalgae are bred in installations offshore without any fertilisers. The installations have proven to withstand the extreme climate and waves of the ocean. Then the microalgae are collected, washed with water and dried in a room ready for the market.

Thanks to its stunning nutritional value (low content of sodium, minerals, amino acids, natural food additives), seaweed is considered a “superfood”. Not only can it relieve pressure from arable lands as an excellent ingredient of people’s diet, but it can also be used as animal feed.

Ocean Rainforest has a “win-win-win” business model. It’s beneficial for the environment, valuable for the local economy and good for the health of consumers.
